IP rating of enclosures

IP Code is the protection class of electrical devices’ enclosures, indicating the degree of protection against:

  • access to dangerous parts inside the enclosure,
  • penetration of foreign solids.
  • harmful effects of water penetration.

It is defined for both electrical and non-electrical enclosures

An IP Code value appropriately selected to the operating conditions significantly affects the safety of its use. In domestic conditions, cheaper meters with a low degree of protection perform well.

A high protection rating is essential in a less friendly environment:

  • for people who work outside, exposed to weather conditions, e.g. electricians, construction supervisor and technical Inspection, etc.
  • for those who work in dusty and/or wet conditions, e.g. employees of the wood processing industry, builders, etc.

Foreign matter within the meaning of the IP Code refers to all kinds of lumps, dust and fibre. Protection against ingress of water applies only to water and does not include other types of liquid e.g. solvents, petrol, etc.

The proper marking consists of two letters and two digits for example. IP 67. The first digit indicates the degree of protection against touching the internal components of the equipment and ingress of solids. The second digit indicates the degree of protection against water penetration

Degrees of protection of electrical equipment against contact and foreign objects

The first digit of the marking Degree of protection (protection against contact and foreign objects)
0 No special protection
1 Protection against ingress of foreign objects of diameter greater than 50 mm (large solids). No protection against intentional touching, e.g. with the hand, but prevents access by large surfaces of the body.
2 Protection against ingress of solids of diameter greater than 12 mm (medium-large foreign objects). Prevents access by the fingers or other objects of similar size.
3 Protection against ingress of solids of diameter greater than 2.5 mm. Prevents access by tools, wires or similar objects of diameter greater than 2.5 mm.
4 Protection against ingress of solids of diameter greater than 1 mm. Prevents access by tools, wires or similar objects of diameter greater than 1 mm.
5 Protection against harmful deposition of dust. The penetration of dust is not entirely precluded, but it is prevented from penetrating in quantities that could disrupt the operation of the device (protection against dust). Complete protection against contact.
6 Protection against dust penetration (dustproof). Complete protection against contact.

Degrees of protection of electrical equipment against water

The second digit of the marking Degree of protection (protection against water)
0 No special protection
1 Protection against vertically falling drops of water; water can not exert any adverse effects (in the form of water droplets).
2 Protection against vertically falling drops of water. Water must not exert any harmful effect if the device (enclosure) are tilted relative to its normal position at 15° (diagonally falling drops of water).
3 Protection against water falling at any angle less than 60° relative to the vertical position. Water must not exert any harmful effect (splashing water).
4 Protection against water splashing from all directions on the device (its enclosure). Water must not exert any harmful effect (splashing water).
5 Protection against pressure water jet (from a nozzle), falling on the device (enclosure) from all directions. Water must not have any harmful effect (water in the form of a stream under pressure).
6 Protection against strong sea wave or jet of pressurized water. Water cannot penetrate into the interior of the device (enclosure) in harmful quantities (it cannot flood the device).
7 Protection against water, when the device (its enclosure) is immersed in water under defined pressure conditions for a specified time. Water cannot penetrate in harmful quantities (submersion).
8 The device (enclosure) is suitable for continuous immersion in water (flooding) in the conditions described by the manufacturer of the equipment.
