IP rating of enclosures
IP Code is the protection class of electrical devices’ enclosures, indicating the degree of protection against:
- access to dangerous parts inside the enclosure,
- penetration of foreign solids.
- harmful effects of water penetration.
It is defined for both electrical and non-electrical enclosures
An IP Code value appropriately selected to the operating conditions significantly affects the safety of its use. In domestic conditions, cheaper meters with a low degree of protection perform well.
A high protection rating is essential in a less friendly environment:
- for people who work outside, exposed to weather conditions, e.g. electricians, construction supervisor and technical Inspection, etc.
- for those who work in dusty and/or wet conditions, e.g. employees of the wood processing industry, builders, etc.
Foreign matter within the meaning of the IP Code refers to all kinds of lumps, dust and fibre. Protection against ingress of water applies only to water and does not include other types of liquid e.g. solvents, petrol, etc.
The proper marking consists of two letters and two digits for example. IP 67. The first digit indicates the degree of protection against touching the internal components of the equipment and ingress of solids. The second digit indicates the degree of protection against water penetration

| 5 | Protection against pressure water jet (from a nozzle), falling on the device (enclosure) from all directions. Water must not have any harmful effect (water in the form of a stream under pressure). |
| 6 | Protection against strong sea wave or jet of pressurized water. Water cannot penetrate into the interior of the device (enclosure) in harmful quantities (it cannot flood the device). |
